Get Ready
Watch your toddler for signs of readiness. Does your child stay dry for several hours? Have you noticed that your child tells you their diaper needs to be changed or even lets you know before they urinate or have a bowel movement? Once you start to hear, "Mommy, I need to poop," it may be time to start potty training.
Avoid times of stress. If you or your toddler are upset, it will spill over into potty training. Just wait.
You may want to wait until summer. When it is warmer, your toddler can wear fewer clothes -- making it a lot easier for a little one to get pants off in time. Whether summer or winter, be sure to dress your child in pants that they can easily pull down alone.
Don't rush. A recent study has shown that, in general, it takes longer to complete the potty training process when parents start earlier. When your child is eager, the process is short. Follow your child's lead to find that window of opportunity for short potty training.
Follow Your Child's Lead
It is easier on parent and child if the child chooses when to begin. That doesn't mean you can't nudge the process along by making sure your child becomes curious.
Potty chair. By the time your child is about 18 months old, have a potty chair around and ready without too much focus on what it is for. Let them ask, "What is that for?"
Training pants. Even before you have started potty training -- that is, talking with your toddler about the toilet and making regular trips there -- you may want to have a couple pair of training pants on hand. Some toddlers know exactly what they want, and they may announce that TODAY is the day they stop wearing diapers. Be ready!
Why, what, why? Be ready to answer questions when your toddler asks about the new potty chair or training pants.
Keep It Light
When your child decides it is time to wear training pants during the day, celebrate! Provide positive reinforcement. Laugh when it gets funny. Let go of accidents. If you can be positive about the whole experience, it will be easier on both of you.
Dry nights will follow later. If your baby resists diapering at night, you may want to graduate to nighttime underwear that is still absorbent with a waterproof outer layer.
